What is 216 Area Code?

Ohio's 216 area code encompasses the greater Cleveland region, providing phone services to millions of residents. It is one of Ohio’s original three area codes, established in 1947.

Ohio has a total of 14 area codes: 216, 330/234, 419/567, 440, 513/283, 614/380, 740/220, and 937/326. The original area code, 216, is one of the three original area codes created in 1947. In 1996, 330/234 was split off from 216; in 1998, 567 was created as an overlay of 419; and in 2000, 440 was split off from 216. In 2003, 513/283 became an overlay of both 513 and 284, 614/380 was split off from 614 in 2009, 740/220 split off from 740 in 2011, and 937/326 became an overlay of 937 and 326 in 2014. All of these area codes are still active today. Ohio's system of area codes is continually changing to meet the needs of its expanding population and communication infrastructure.
