Where is 917 Area Code from?

Received 917 area code text message and wonder where it is from?

Area code 917 is the only New York area code that serves all five boroughs of New York City in New York state. 917 area code time zone is Eastern time zone but it depends on the Daylight Saving Time (DST) as New York changes from EST (UTC/GMT-4) in March to DST (UTC/GTM-5).

All of the boroughs of New York City were initially served by the 212 area code, but beginning in the 1980s, the North American Numbering Plan had to separate the boroughs into two categories. The 718 area code was given to Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island, while 212 numbers were only assigned to Manhattan and the Bronx. The 917 area code wasn't made available as the default for all cell phones and pagers in the city until 1992. As an overlay for area codes 212 and 718, it entered operation for the first time on January 1, 1992. To make room for landlines, all other numbers that were previously assigned to mobile phones and pagers were changed to the 917 area code. And while the FCC ultimately decided that providers had to limit some area codes to particular services, 917 numbers have come to represent New York City, particularly during the early days when cell phones were just starting to gain popularity and were frequently used to denote status.

Except for 917, all most area codes serve only Manhattan or other 5 boroughs. Here is a full list of New York area codes.
